(1) "THE ROAD TO GUANTANAMO" - FILM AND DISCUSSION
Sunday, February 18, 2007 6:45 pm
2422 Jefferson Park Ave., Charlottesville
The film tells the story of three young British men from Tipton in the West
Midlands who were captured by the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan in 2001
and detained as "enemy combatants" at Guant namo Bay, without charge or
legal representation, for nearly three years. As well as interviews with the
three men themselves and archive news footage from the period, the film
contains an account of the three men's experiences following their capture
by the Northern Alliance, the subsequent handover to the United States
military and their detention in Cuba. It contains several scenes depicting
their alleged beatings during interrogation, the use of alleged torture
techniques such as 'stress positions' and attempts to extract forced
confessions of involvement with Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
Directions: 2422 JPA is on the right side of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Coming from Cleveland Ave, turn right onto JPA, it's the fourth home on the
right.
Important: Bring a chair or pillow!

(2) MOVIE: 'RED STATE' WITH FILMMAKER MICHAEL SHEA
Thursday, February 22, 2007 7:00 pm
Sojourners Church (UCC), 1017 Elliott Ave. corner of Monticello Ave. and
Elliott.
The Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice hosts the film and
filmmaker for a screening of the movie: RED STATE.
Background:
Following the elections of 2004, filmmaker, Michael Shea set out across the
country to visit the "red states" and find an answer to the question that
haunts thinking people around the world: Why would anyone vote for George
Bush?
Mr. Shea interviewed hundreds of "actual" people - not pundits, politicians
or reporters - to
find out what they had to say about their country and themselves, and what
makes a Red State person Red. The result of that journey is the thoughtful,
funny, and provocative documentary, RED STATE.
Michael Shea will be available after the film for a discussion.
Free and open to the public.\r\n\r\n
