RESPONDING EFFECTIVELY TO THE CHALLENGES OF
REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS

Dr. Dennis Hunt, Ph.D. and Dr. Emi Furukawa,
Ph.D. will provide an overview of the
challenges faced by refugees and immigrants
and typical patterns of their adjustment in
the United States. In addition they will
discuss key elements in building health care
and social services systems that are
responsive to complex psychological and
functional adjustment needs.

Speakers:

Dr. Dennis Hunt, Ph.D., founder and director
for 25 years of the Center for Multicultural
Human Services (Falls Church, Va.) and
president of Child Mental Health
International. Dr. Hunt is a licensed
clinical psychologist and has consulted for
the media, school systems and human service
programs throughout the U.S. and in Canada
on refugee mental health issues. He has also
served as a consultant to private and
governmental organizations in Brazil and
Bosnia on the development of NGOs and
programs for at-risk youth and families. He
is involved in national and international
refugee advocacy efforts.

Dr. Emi Furukawa, Ph.D., licensed clinical
psychologist at the Center for Multicultural
Human Services, and specialist in assessment
and treatment of children of diverse
backgrounds. Dr. Furukawa provides direct
clinical services and consultation in
various community settings and trains and
supervises graduate-level trainees; she also
conducts intake and outcome evaluations for
many CMHS programs and assists in the
development of treatment programs,
assessment measures, and training curricula.

Drs. Hunt and Furukawa will also be speaking
at Family Medicine grand rounds at 12:30 on
Friday, 11/9, but the venue is small and the
focus of the presentation more specialized.
