*The Fall & Rise of American Liberalism: Media, Race, Religion & Bruce
Springsteen*

WHEN: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 12 Noon - 1:30 pm (book signing to follow)

WHERE:Harrison Institute Auditorium
Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia

American 20th-century liberalism may be poised for a comeback. Attacks
from aggressive conservatives and trenchant criticism from the
multicultural left have rendered consensus liberalism a shell of a
political movement and a label that liberal candidates tend to shun. But
is all this changing? This panel discussion will ask the following
questions: What aspects of 20th-century American liberalism are
inappropriate for the 21st century? Is the United States a fundamentally
conservative nation? Can our fractured and hyperactive media environment
foster a sense of common purpose or tolerate the deliberate temperament
of liberalism? Can liberalism thrive in an increasingly diverse United
States - i.e., can it contain multitudes?

*Help Host Fundraiser for Cindy Sheehan in Charlottesville*

Would you like to be part of a host committee for a fundraiser for Cindy
Sheehan in Charlottesville?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is working hard to give Bush and Cheney
another $178 billion or so for the occupation of Iraq, money that might
very well also be used to attack Iran. Pelosi is blocking any
impeachment hearings for Cheney or Bush.

Our friend, Cindy Sheehan, who has been to Charlottesville twice before,
has announced that she will run against Pelosi as an independent
candidate for peace and the rule of law. Here's the San Francisco
Chronicle's article from Friday: http://afterdowningstreet.org/node/33022

Here's Cindy's website: http://cindyforcongress.org

Here are 1,500 articles by and about Cindy:
http://afterdowningstreet.org/cindy

Cindy can come here for a campaign fundraiser event on the evening of
Thursday, May 22nd.

Would you like to be part of a host committee for this event? This would
mean helping to plan and promote it, helping at the event, being named
in the materials, and getting into the event free. Contact David Swanson
immediately at david at davidswanson.org <mailto:david at davidswanson.org>

*May 1 Day of Action for Immigrant Rights Funding Appeal*

In the face of escalating attacks on immigrant peoples nationwide,
especially in nearby Prince William County, people throughout the region
have united to say ¡Ya Basta! Enough! The May 1, 2008 Coalition has been
meeting weekly to plan the annual May 1 Day of Action for Immigrant Rights.

Although our work is entirely volunteer, there are many expenses that

& sign materials, printing costs, transportation and more. We must raise
at least $3,500 over the next week to meet these basic needs. Those who
can't help financially but wish to volunteer can call 202-640-5315.

Your contributions can be sent to Mexicanos Sin Fronteras / Mexicans
Without Borders, PO Box K, Woodbridge, VA. 22191. (Please note "For May

*Petition to End Modern-Day Slavery in the Fields of Florida*

CCPJ has endorsed the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' petition to end
Sweatshops & Modern-Day Slavery in the Fields of Florida. The latest
target of the Fair Food effort is Burger King.

The CIW is launching a national petition drive to demand that Burger
King and other food industry leaders work with the CIW to improve the
wages and working conditions of the workers who pick their tomatoes, and
join with the CIW in an industry-wide effort to eliminate modern-day
slavery and human rights abuses from Florida's fields. The petitions
will serve as notice that those who sign are "prepared to stop
patronizing Burger King now, and other food industry leaders in the
future, should they fail to do so." The campaign comes on the 200th
anniversary of the US ban against the importation of slaves, and echoes
key strategies of the early abolitionist movement that helped hasten the
end of slavery in the 19th century.

Please visit www.ciw-online.org <http://www.ciw-online.org> for further
information and to sign the petition before April 24, 2008.

*No More Nukes at Lake Anna -- Two Ways to Help!*

1. Please continue to send your comments about the proposed nuclear
power plant at Lake Anna to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at
NORTHANNA.Colaeis at nrc.gov <mailto:NORTHANNA.Colaeis at nrc.gov>.

Public comment should stress global warming issues, ongoing and
ever-worsening drought conditions in central VA and the entire Southeast
and the impact of drought on nuclear plants (threats of shutdowns,
etc.).Stress that we have a water crisis throughout Virginia, that Lake
Anna is not a sufficiently robust body of water to sustain any
additional reactors and that it is already ecologically impaired.

Message should be site-specific as that is all the NRC is concerned
about for the purposes of this public comment period.

2. The People's Alliance for Clean Energy (PACE) and Blue Ridge
Environmental Defense League (BREDL) as well as three Louisa residents
are appealing (in court) the decision by our own VA Dept. of
Environmental Quality
to issue Dominion a 316A variance to continue to use the "cooling
lagoons" at Lake Anna as its own private Waste Heat Treatment Facility
and dump water used to cool nukes without an upper temperature limit.
This is in violation of the Clean Water Act.

For further information visit
http://www.charlottesvillepeace.org/node/1460 or call 434-296-2494.

Money is needed to fund the appeal. Tax deductible donations can be made
to PACE, P.O. Box 1166, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
