*Two legislative announcements and a change of venue for the CCPJ
Mailing Party:

*

*CALL TO ACTION!* from The People United info at thepeopleunited.org
<mailto:info at thepeopleunited.org>

During the 2008 Virginia legislative session, more than 100 bills that
restricted the rights of and services for immigrants were proposed. On
its own any one of these bills may have seemed too narrow in scope to be
of concern. However, all of them are intended to do harm and together
they reflect the climate of persecution and scapegoating. One tactic is
to make use of what have been minor driving infractions to open the door
for harsher punishments.

SB113 TARGETS THE UNDOCUMENTED BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO GET A DRIVERS
LICENSE. SB441, WOULD PROHIBIT LAW ENFORCEMENT FROM ASKING THE
IMMIGRATION STATUS OF VICTIMS AND WITNESSES REPORTING CRIME.

We need your to help us *PASS SB441, AND DEFEAT SB113* in the House
Courts Committee this Friday.

PLEASE INSIST THAT YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND ACQUAINTANCES ALSO CALL; ALL
LEGISLATORS KEEP DETAILS ON HOW MANY PEOPLE CONTACT THEM ON EACH ISSUE.
EVERY SINGLE CALL MAKES A DIFFERENCE SO I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR
HELP!

When you call, you can say: "I am [name], I am from [city], I ask the
Delegate to support SB441, which would ensure that Victims and witnesses
of crime feel safe reporting crime without being questioned on their
immigration status. Help us stop violent criminals and make Virginia
safer by ensuring that victims and witnesses of crime are able to report
it. Thank you!" You can call any time, even during the night and leave a
message.

Please help us by calling your delegate, the members of the Committee
and the Governor for support to *PASS SB441*:
1. If you don't know who your Delegate is, or don't have their
information, you go to the following link, put in your address, and it
will give you all the information on your legislators:
http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform

2. The Governor's constituency line is: (804) 786-2211

3. Members of the House Courts of Justice Committee:

ONLY two Delegates voted *YES ON SB441 & NO ON SB113*. We need to thank
them and ask them to vote the same way on Friday.
Morgan Griffith (804) 698-1008
Kenneth Melvin (804) 698-1080

When you call you can say, "I am [name], from [city], I want to thank
the Delegate for voting YES ON SB441 AND NO ON SB113 last Monday at the
Criminal subcommittee; I ask him to vote THE SAME WAY at the full
committee this Friday. Victims and witnesses need to feel safe to report
crime, AND IT IS UNFAIR TO TARGET THE UNDOCUMENTED BECAUSE THEY ARE
UNABLE TO GET A DRIVERS LICENSE. Again, I thank him for his votes last
Monday." {You can personalize it with your own story if you wish!}

We know the following Delegates voted YES ON SB441, but they also
supported SB113: we need to thank them for voting YES ON SB441, but tell
them we need them to VOTE NO ON SB 113 this Friday.
David Albo (Chair) (804) 698-1042
Brian Moran (804) 698-1046
Vivian Watts (804) 698-1039
Shannon Valentine (804) 698-1023

When you call you can say, "I am [name], from [city], I want to thank
the Delegate for voting YES ON SB441, but am concerned that the Delegate
ALSO VOTED YES ON SB113 last Monday at the Criminal subcommittee; I ask
the Delegate to vote YES ON SB441, BUT NO ON SB113 at the full committee
this Friday. Victims and witnesses need to feel safe to report crime,
AND IT IS UNFAIR TO TARGET THE UNDOCUMENTED BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO
GET A DRIVERS LICENSE. Thank you." {You can personalize it with your own
story if you wish!}

We need to ask the following delegates to vote *YES ON SB441, BUT NO ON
SB113*:
Delegates: phone number:
Terry G. Kilgore (804) 698-1001
Clifford Athey (804) 698-1018

William Barlow (804) 698-1064
David Toscano (804) 698-1057
Dave Marsden (804) 698-1041

When you call you can say, "I am [name], from [city], I ask the Delegate
to vote YES ON SB441, BUT NO ON SB113 THIS FRIDAY. Victims and witnesses
need to feel safe to report crime, AND IT IS UNFAIR TO TARGET THE
UNDOCUMENTED BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO GET A DRIVERS LICENSE. Thank
you." {You can personalize it with your own story if you wish!}
