Wednesday Film Series: Up the Yangtze
WHEN: Wednesday, September 23 7:00 pm
WHERE: Greene County Library, 222Main St., Stanardsville, VA
UP THE YANGTZE: Directed and written by Yung Chang (2007)
. An astonishing documentary of culture clash and the erasure of
history amid China's economic miracle. The film explores the
incalculable human impact of the giant Three Gorges Dam project on the
Yangtze, China's longest river. When completed, the 600-foot-high dam
will be the largest hydroelectric project in the world. As we watch
the steadily rising water swallow more and more of the landscape, the
film conveys an ominous sense of a society changing too fast in its
stampede into an unknown future. A collaboration with P.O.V. PBS'
award-winning nonfiction film series.
Sponsored by the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library

Who Decides About War? Conference
WHEN: Friday and Saturday, October 2-3
WHERE: Georgetown Law School, Washington, DC.
Who decides about war and peace? Congress? The President? The Courts?
The People?
What kind of national defense should the U.S. have? What type of
military?
WHO DECIDES ABOUT WAR?
The National Conference on War Powers, Law, and Democracy
will confront essential questions raised by the U.S. invasions and
occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. These questions are timely, as
the process that brought the United States into those wars is widely
recognized today as having been flawed at best, dishonest at worst.
This engaging event will bring together activists and academics,
public officials and veterans, lawyers and military families.
We will use facilitated discussions, panel presentations, and
workshops to accomplish two goals. First, to educate ourselves and
each other about the issues involved, the state of the law, and
alternatives. Second, to develop a statement of common principles
leading to a more democratic, comprehensive, and durable national
defense policy — one that will honor the Constitution and help keep
the United States from entering into unnecessary wars.
