I've poked around FireChat for Android and found it contains code for operating over BluetoothSocket (Serial Port Profile), WifiDirect, and Bluetooth LE. It seems designed to be pretty transport / network / link agnostic. </div><div><br></div><div>Android 5 / L should be able to play with iOS 6+ in terms of Bluetooth LE. It appears FireChat have moved away from Apple's closed Multipeer<br>
stuff since their messages now work across iOS and Android devices.<br>
Rumor is they built their own cross platform protocol on top of<br>
bluetooth and wifi, but not much in the way of details yet:<br>
