Save Public Access TV A Call to Action!
We would like to inform you about some legislation making its way through
the Senate and the House that threatens to dismantle Public Access TV. This
legislation will affect Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN), the largest
public access center in the country and all the other 2000 Public Access TV
centers across the nation.
Oppose these Bills that Threaten to Destroy Community Media!
Public Access TV is Under Attack!
The Senate ³Broadband Investment and Consumer Choice Act² (S.1504) and House
and Senate ³Video Choice Act of 2005² (H.R.3146 & S.1349) could end funding
for the creation of programming, for training, for access to equipment and
studios. They could end funding for MNN¹s Community Media Grants, and could
strip MNN of channel space on cable TV. These Bills could end free and
democratic public communication in the Borough of Manhattan, and at every
other Public Access TV center around the country.
These Bills would silence the diversity of voices heard and take valuable
media resources away from our communities. It could eliminate financial and
technical resources that are critical to the creation of local programming
on the arts, culture, social issues, community affairs, and other areas of
the public interest. These Bills will impact the most disenfranchised,
low-income communities that rely on Public Access TV the most.
What you can do!
We¹ve created a simple web site that enables you to sign on to several
letters addressed to New York Senators, Representatives and Mayor Bloomberg.
It¹s simple, go to:
http://mnn.org/saveaccess/ and click through the three steps. It will take
you less than 3 minutes but it could make a huge difference in the
continuation of community media!
Spread the Word in your Community Organization!
If you would like to request a ³Save Public Access Toolkit² to help spread
the word in your organization and community, just email us at:
saveaccess at mnn.org or call us at (212) 757-2670 x308
Thanks for your support!
Sincerely,
Community Media Department
