The unifying link between the films in this program is not something
about the makers, the subjects, the content, the time, the place of
origin, etc, but rather their relationship to two events happening later
in the week. It is a bit of a miscellany, as compared to our previous
programs, but the connections will of course arise: the difficulties in
putting intellectuals on camera; capturing and delivering ideas and
philosophies in moving images; the relationship between countercultural
media and (direct) activism, etc. Red Channels has always intentionally
tried to position itself as a part of the public sphere, with
salon-style gatherings and discussion. It's fitting that we now try to
more directly engage with contemporary conversation and events happening
around us.

Before Slavoj Zizek appeared in Astra Taylor's films Zizek! (2005) and
Examined Life (2008), or Sophie Fiennes' The Pervert's Guide to Cinema
(2006), there was this German TV production we present here, filmed
mostly in New York City, in advance of his lecture at Cooper Union on
October 14th.

This is the second of three screenings Red Channels has organized with
the Left Forum, in advance of their October 15th free public debate with
Tom Hayden, Stanley Aronowitz, Josh MacPhee, and others at the Community
Church.

This is the first of a series of screenings Red Channels hope to do with
Paper Tiger Television; going through our archives to present a rich
history of media analysis, counter-hegemony, collective filmmaking, and
video experimentation.

Dara Greenwald is a video artist and cultural organizer, and helped put
together the remarkable "Signs of Change" festival and screening series
last year. She has worked closely with Josh MacPhee, featured in her
video on this program, and who will participate in the October 15th
event at the Community Church.
