Between 10:40 pm on October 22 and 12:07 am on October 23, all servers
in our Telehouse location were offline.
The downtime was a result of Hurricane Electric, our upstream provider,
shutting down our service without notifying us.
The justification for the service shutdown was a Digital Millennium
Copyright Act infringement letter sent to Hurricane Electric by the US
Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's goal was to remove the parody press
release that the Yes Men published (see http://theyesmen.org/chamber for
more information). Despite being protected free speech, Hurricane
Electric nonetheless chose to shut off service to hundreds of May
First/People Link members.
Following our protocol in these situations, we moved the site in
question to one of our alternate providers, and at that point, service
was restored.
