The Committee to Protect Journalists seeks a Staff Technologist with the
passion and technical acumen to help guide the organization into
journalism’s dynamic digital future.

CPJ's Mission

CPJ promotes press freedom worldwide and defends the right of
journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. CPJ ensures the
free flow of news and commentary by taking action wherever journalists
are attacked, imprisoned, killed, kidnapped, threatened, censored, or
harassed.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Internet Advocacy Coordinator, the Staff Technologist
will be responsible for identifying, analyzing and helping solve privacy
and security challenges faced by online journalists. In addition to
possessing a high degree of technical sophistication, the successful
applicant should also be adept at communicating complex technical
information to non-technical audiences.

The successful applicant will be able to work immediately. The
responsibilities of the Staff Technologist will include:

    Conducting research into emerging threats to online journalists,
from custom malware to draconian legislation.
    Evaluating existing high-tech tools and techniques used by
journalists who report from physical and digital frontlines.
    Clearly communicating press-freedom-friendly positions on technology
policy questions to the news media, government officials, the general
public and ICT companies worldwide.
    Working with CPJ staff and other stakeholders to develop digital
security best practices and protocols.
    In conjunction with the Internet Advocacy Coordinator, identifying
trends at the intersection of law, policy and technology.
    Provide general administrative support to the Internet Program.

Essential Experience

    The ability to distill complex technical information into its
essential parts, and communicate it to non-technical audiences.
    A strong background in, and the ability to engage deeply with,
computer and mobile security.
    An interest in press freedom and human rights.
    World-class programming skills.
    A computer science degree or significant and equivalent experience
is required. A master’s degree in a relevant field is desirable.
    This position may include some travel.

Location

San Francisco or New York City.
