iOS 7 launched a software product/framework called iBeacon. It's a
classic Apple move to try and obsolete NFC. It uses Bluetooth 4 Low
Energy mode and some other wacky location services bundled in the
platform. The Multipeer framework might use some of this.
The devs are the Open Garden people, which IIRC has been around for
quite some time on Android and iOS.
