LOWDOWN AUGUST 2009

MF/PL members meet in Detroit at the Allied Media Conference and work
begins with the People's Movement Assembly at the Kentucky Social
Forum all while big changes are in the works for members' online needs.

MEMBER NEWS

During the Allied Media Conference in Detroit, July 19, MF/PL members
met for lunch. The group, all women, was really excited to be thinking
about how we, as members, can collectively grow our knowledge and
skills to share with one another through mayfirst.org. Excitement was
definitely a reflection of the AMC empowered-youth-media space. Some
ideas for building out FAQ pages include: more FAQ pages based on
recurring ticket questions, better mailman interface, Drupal
skill-shares/workshops, and using screencasts used for how-to
instructions and on FAQ pages.

MFPL co-directory Jamie McClelland traveled to Berea, Kentucky to
attend the national face-to-face meeting of the 2010 US Social Forum
Peoples' Movements Assembly and to participate in the first ever
Kentucky Social Forum. The Kentucky Social Forum is the first regional
social forum leading up to Detroit in 2010!

QUICK NEWS & NOTICES

Upgrade to the members control panel: In the next week or so we are
planning a major upgrade of the Members Control Panel. With the new
version you'll be able to manage your own membership, create your own
hosting orders, and for interested members, manage your own server!

FYI: IF YOU'RE A MF/PL MEMBER, DO YOU KNOW...

...that MF/PL members have Secure Shell access to their data on MF/PL servers?

Secure Shell uses the same method for authentication as secure FTP.
So, if you already know your username, password and host for
connecting to your server via secure FTP, you can use the exact same
information to connect via secure shell.

You can use Putty, a free and open source program, if you're running
Windows, and Terminal (located in Utilities) if you're using a Mac to
connect. You simply type "ssh username at host", where host is your
mayfirst.org server and username and password for MF/PL members with
user accounts.

The first time you connect to a server you will be warned that you are
connecting to a server for the first time and asked if you want to
accept the server's "fingerprint." Please consult with our
fingerprints page, comparing the fingerprint you are being offered
with the one we have published to make sure they are the same. If so,
you may safely tell your program to remember the fingerprint.
