  April in Review <http://mayfirst.org/lowdown/may-2011/april-review>

by: mallory </users/mallory>

As we celebrate in solidarity with all workers and students
commemorating May 1st, we're sending out our first edition of the new
Lowdown <http://mayfirst.org/lowdown>! Last month, we published a few
articles summarizing our work in March
<http://mayfirst.org/lowdown/april-2011> but never sent out the email to
our mailing list <https://lists.mayfirst.org/mailman/listinfo/lowdown>.
Just a reminder that we always welcome MF/PL members or other
technologists that would like to contribute as guest writers for the
Lowdown. Just email us at info at mayfirst.org <mailto:info at mayfirst.org>.

Globalizing Participation: One Year of Praxis
  <http://mayfirst.org/lowdown/may-2011/globalizing-participation-one-year-praxis>

by: mallory </users/mallory>

In just one year, MF/PL has supported seven convergence events by
providing live streaming from locations all over the world. The
underlying goal behind our ongoing work with live video is fundamental:
to make possible the participation in global, political convergences
regardless of location. Alfredo Lopez writes about our first event in
Bolivia, "Through this work, we challenge the false and destructive
border and national divisions imposed on the indigenous peoples of our
Hemisphere and continuously imposed on us all. We will make this
conference a truly Hemispheric conference."

  Data Security <http://mayfirst.org/lowdown/may-2011/data-security>

by: jamie </users/jamie>

The way we evaluate Internet technology is changing ... quickly.

Seems like you can't read the news these days without hearing about a
security breach leaking hundreds of thousands of email addresses
<https://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/05/business/05hack.html>, a "redundant"
cloud service being down for over two days
<http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/21/amazon-cloud-failure-takes-down-web-sites/>,
or a mobile device maker accidentally tracking your movements
<https://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/21/business/21data.html>.

  Building a Home for Techies
  <http://mayfirst.org/lowdown/may-2011/building-home-techies>

by: alfredo </user/3>

It has always been a priority but the unique challenge of involving
progressive techies in the work of May First/People Link has never been
more pressing. And never has it been more complicated. We talk about it
all the time here and we probably each think about it when we're not
talking about it. While we have a community and team of some of the best
politically progressive techies in this country (maybe even the world),
there are many more out there who don't work with us. Indeed, many who
don't know who we are.

How do we change that? I think my Aunt Virginia can help.
