  How do you spy on someone?
  <https://mayfirst.org/lowdown/august-2013/how-do-you-spy-someone>

The recent revelations of spying by the National Security Agency has
raised many questions about how the spying happens and what we can do to
protect ourselves.

While the idea of computer spying suggests high tech devices and teams
of brilliant geeks decrypting carefully obscured messages, the reality
is far less interesting. According to the documents released by Edward
Snowden, most of the spying happens via a letter from the government
being sent to a corporate provider demanding that they turn over data.
No intercepts. No undercover agents. Just a team of lawyers and a lot of
data.

  Has May First/People Link ever received an NSA letter?
  <https://mayfirst.org/lowdown/august-2013/has-may-firstpeople-link-ever-received-nsa-letter>

With all the news about the National Security Agency (NSA) requesting
(and receiving) massive amounts of private user data from corporate
providers like Google, Facebook, Yahoo and others, we've been repeatedly
asked whether we've ever received such a letter.

We're fortunate to report that the answer is no. We've never received a
letter from the NSA.

  NSA Prism Program Spotlights US as International Big Brother
  <https://mayfirst.org/lowdown/august-2013/nsa-prism-program-spotlights-us-international-big-brother>

Revelations of the US government's expansive surveillance program has
generated intense criticism of a democratic government's hypocrisy in
spying on it's own citizens. But new information continues to emerge,
detailing the extent to which non-US-citizens are also being targeted
and surveilled. While these instrusions are backed by murky sets of
legal justifications that challenge the US's own constitutional
protections,(1) they also pose serious threats to international human
rights law(2).

  APC statement on Bradley Manning: Guilty verdict a new low for US
  human rights <https://mayfirst.org/es/node/390>

The flip side of the privacy debate is the question of the lengths the
US government will go to protect their own information from the watchful
eyes of the broader public. Here, May First/People Link member, the
Association for Progressive Communications (APC) offers a powerful
statement on the Bradley Manning verdict, government attitudes towards
whistleblowers, the implications for protecting human rights both online

  <https://mayfirst.org/es/lowdown/august-2013/declaracion-de-apc-sobre-bradley-manning>
