I'd agree that rumor is likely true. I've poked around FireChat for Android
and found it contains code for operating over BluetoothSocket (Serial Port
Profile), WifiDirect, and Bluetooth LE. It seems designed to be pretty
transport / network / link agnostic.
Android 5 / L should be able to play with iOS 6+ in terms of Bluetooth LE.
Both will be able to operate as Central & Peripheral devices for scanning /
advertising a service.
